Back in March, David over at one of the most intellectually and aesthetically sophisticated pipe-smokers blogs going, TobaccoDays.com, launched “The Most Creative Pipe Photo Contest, which I heard about through Neill Archer Roan’s A Passion for Pipes blog. In addition to walking away with some nice pipe-prize money, the winners, he wrote, would have their photos displayed in an exhibition at this year’s Chicagoland Pipe Show. Launch of the Neatpipes Chubby AeroBilliard
A few weeks ago Luca emailed me that he was sending a prototype for a new kind of Neatpipes Chubby, an AeroBilliard. Without knowing what it was, the name nevertheless sent my mind racing. You see, I come from a long line of aviators. During World War II, all three of my mother’s brothers served in the Army Air Force, and my father’s only brother was killed on a routine training mission after the war. My father-in-law was navigator on Gettin’ Ready, one of the colossal B-29 Superfortresses that flew out of the Tinian Islands. I built countless WWII scale-model fighters as a kid. Read more

PIPE ACQUISITION DISORDER, or P.A.D., first recognized by kapnismologist Dean James in a classic ASP post at the turn of the new century, is by now a well-known disorder among pipe smokers the world over. It strikes without warning, afflicting the pipeman regardless of age, class, station or rank. It is actively encouraged by retailers, brick-and-mortar tobacconists and even the pipe makers themselves, without apparent regard for the well-being of those who come under its influence.
